SPANISH JOE REMEMBERS

Pepe Gonzalez didn't just play bass — he helped forge the sound of a city. Spanish Joe Remembers is a short documentary portrait of the founder of Zapata, DC's first Black Latino funk band, structured as a four-part video poem that moves through music, poetry, and rare archival photographs. Along the way, the film resurrects the legacies of jazz icons María Rodriguez and Lawrence Wheatley, recovering a vital chapter of Washington, DC's cultural history.
